Currently the commercial fishing industry accident data is obtained by using statistics on a state by state and national level using employer / employee information only from State Workers Compensation agencies and incidents that are reported.

A specific project was initiated between the project lead and Edith Cowan University to investigate all known incidents in the professional fishing and aquaculture industry. These incidents may have resulted in a fatality, serious injury,

The data collection is for the last 30 years and breaks the information down into the following categories for injuries:

• Age
• Gender
• Date of incident
• Industry sector
• Incapacity
• Mechanism of injury
• Event description
• Recommendations

From this information incident reports summaries will be developed to make available to industry. Also findings from the evaluation may provide strategic direction of further initiatives in health and safety in the industry.
